Directorate of Wheat Research
In India, the wheat research started in an organized manner more than hundred years ago after the joining of Sir Howards as the Imperial Botanist at Pusa (Bihar) in 1905. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (erstwhile Imperial Council of Agricultural Research) in 1929 became the main funding agency and promoter of wheat research in India and an important milestone in this process was created with the establishment of the All India Coordinated Wheat Improvement Project (AICWIP) in 1965 by the ICAR with its headquarters at IARI, New Delhi. The initiation of AICWIP resulted in the real breakthrough in productivity, occurred from introduction of semi-dwarf Mexican wheat which led to usher the Green Revolution in the country. This led the recognition of Indias Wheat programme as the largest and perhaps the most remarkable in the developing world by the Nobel Laureate Dr. N.E. Borlaug and his group at CIMMYT, Mexico. The AICWIP was subsequently raised to the status of Directorate of Wheat Research (DWR) in 1978. DWR was later on shifted to its present location at Karnal in 1990. Wheat and barley projects were merged and renamed as the All India Coordinated Wheat & Barley Improvement Project (AICW&BIP) in 1997. By doing so, the ICAR formalised the establishment of a distinct institutional identity for wheat, the second most important cereal crop of the country. ...
